Lymphcare News

Lymphedema is a relatively unknown condition in Ontario. There are very few studies that can provide consistent evidence for the incidence, risk factors, diagnostic criteria or treatment for lymphedema.  Therefore, there are many people in our community that have lymphedema and are unaware of the risks that this condition can pose to their health.

This page is dedicated to new advancements, tips for self-care and ways to take charge of your own health. In no way do the recommendations made on this site substitute for your health professionals advice. Before implementing any changes to your health routine, please consult your health professional.

  • The Canadian Lymphedema Framework

November marked the beginning of a new era for lymphedema care in Canada.  The Canadian Lymphedema Framework is a new initiative lead by prominent leaders in the field of lymphedema. A collaboration of key stakeholders including healthcare professionals, researchers, patients with lymphedema, insurance companies and lymphedema industry representatives to name a few met in Toronto this November. The goal: to improve the management of lymphedema by defining and promoting best practices for improving health outcomes for lymphedema patients.

So, what does this mean? Up until now, lymphedema patients have had little or no resources for management of their condition. The Canadian Lymphedema Framework, while in the beginning stages, will increase medical and political awareness of this chronic condition and hopefully lead to inclusive health care for those with lymphedema that is evidence-based and consistent between all health professionals. Catharine Burt attended the first Canadian Framework meeting and was elated with the events of the day. We are truly moving forward in a positive way for the treatment of lymphedema!

  • Managing Lymphedema

    Weight Control and Lymphedema

Many studies have linked obesity as a risk factor for those at risk or who currently have lymphedema. There is no known diet that a person with lymphedema should follow. The recommendations however are to maintain an ideal body weight. Those who are above their ideal weight should take healthy measures to reduce and thus eliminate this risk factor. Many women taking Tamoxifen can have weight gain as a side effect. Thus, these women should pay particular attention to a healthy diet in order to maintain an ideal body weight.

    Infection Risks with Lymphedema

The risk of a condition known as cellulitis in a lymphedematous region is of major concern and can be very serious or even life threatening.

    1. The accumulation of fluid creates an environment condusive for bacterial growth

    2. The lymphatic capillaries are already overwhelmed or damaged, therefore they are unable or hindered from clearing the bacteria and debris from the area

It is imperitive then that you should take some precautions:

    a) wear gloves for gardening, dishwashing and handling hot items from your stove

    b) Limit time in the sun

    c) Use mosquito repellent

    d) Protect yourself from even the smallest of cuts - hangnails, papercuts, scratches from pets etc.

Prevention is the keystone to avoiding infection. If you acquire a cut or scrape, wash with mild soap and water and watch the area for signs of infection. If you experience the following, see your health professional ASAP:

    1) Pain at site of cut

    2) Redness

    3) Heat/ increased warmth

    4) Increased swelling

    5) Fever / Chills
